Royal Yachting Association (RYA)

Before establishing Sail Nelson, we looked all over the world to find a certifying authority with well structured courses, a high standard of study notes and certification that would be well recognised by visitors to New Zealand. Sail Nelson director John Moore invited the RYA's Chief Sailing Instructor to New Zealand in mid 2003. He organised meetings with sailing instructors, Maritime NZ and the NZ Coastguard Boating Education Service (CBES). At the end of 2003, CBES formed a partnership with the RYA to administer their courses within NZ. John Moore was among the first to be trained as an RYA sailing instructor in New Zealand, and Sail Nelson became a registered RYA sailing school in September 2004.
