| Who should attend? |
This course is the most advanced RYA sailing qualification and is suitable for those planning a professional career as a skipper through the RYA programme. |
| What experience do I need? |
A minimum of 50 days sea time, 2,500 miles traveled, including 5 passages over 60 nautical miles (2 overnight and 2 as skipper). VHF Radio Operators Certificate and First Aid Certificate. You need to be an experienced yachtsman, competent to skipper of a cruising yacht in local areas. A strong understanding of navigation is required. |
| What topics are covered? |
Passage planning, weather, navigation, tides, GPS, rules of the road, safety, emergency procedures, pilotage. |
| How much time is involved? |
5 days/4 nights liveaboard. Courses start at 10am on day one, returning at 5pm on day five with drinks and nibbles at Wakefield Quay House, our B&B overlooking the Nelson harbour entrance. We recommend an additional 2 days onshore navigation theory and 1 day is required for the examination (please contact us for pricing). |
| What do I need to bring? |
Soft, nonslip, non-marking shoes, comfortable clothes, a warm sweater, sunscreen, sunglasses and hat, a swimsuit, towel, sleeping bag, toiletries & medications, change of clothes, a beer or two if required. Pack in a soft bag.
Onshore luggage storage available if
needed at own risk. |
| What do
we provide? |
All safety gear, hot or cold drinks, all meals and snacks. The RYA syllabus & logbook (G15) in which to record your sailing experience (if you don't already have one) and the RYA Yachtmaster. Good quality wet weather clothing can be hired for $50 |
| What certificate will I get and what can I do with it? |
On satisfactory completion of the course you will be eligible to sit the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical examination. This involves an external examiner to join you on the yacht for a practical exam of approx 8 to 10 hours, departing from Port Nelson. Please get in touch with us for pricing of exam fees, commercial endorsement and yacht hire for exam. (Please note: The use of our yacht Manaia for examinations is only available to students who have joined us for a Yachtmaster Offshore 5 day course). |
| How many
on the course? |
A maximum of 4 students plus your RYA licensed skipper/tutor John Moore.
A minimum of 2 students are required
before the course can be confirmed. |
| What if the weathers bad? |
If your instructor decides it would be unsafe to sail and cancels, we will arrange another suitable time.
If your timetable precludes this, we refund
100% of the price. |
