|Who recognises these Certificates
||RYA Ocean and Offshore Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence are recognised by the UK government's Maritime and Coastguard Agency (the MCA) as evidence of the holder's ability to command a variety of sailing vessels. With the addition of an RRTOC radio operators license, attendance at basic first aid and firefighting courses and a medical clearance, the Offshore Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence becomes commercially endorsed and is accepted as a commercial skippers ticket in the UK.
|Don't I get a certificate with my RYA course?
||Sorry, no. You will (probably) receive a Certificate of Completion after your course, but like a drivers license, Certificates of Competence are independently examined and require a separate application.
|What use is a UK qualification to a Kiwi?
||Most of the world's superyacht fleet sails under British registry, and are manned by RYA/MCA qualified crew. These qualifications have therefore become the benchmark for professional yacht skippers and crew worldwide. We are presently lobbying for its acceptance in NZ
|What Certificates are available?
||Three Certificate of Competence exams are associated with the RYA programme. The first, Coastal Skipper, is a practical test of your grasp of the skills and techniques taught on the Coastal Skipper course. The second, Yachtmaster Offshore, tests your skills and judgement as a skipper. The third, Yachtmaster Ocean, assesses you ability to perform astro navigation. All Ocean and Offshore Yachtmaster certificates can be commercially endorsed.
|How are the exams conducted?
||Coastal and Ocean Yachtmaster exams are conducted aboard a yacht skippered and crewed by exam candidates and take from 8 to 12 hours to complete. Candidates take turns as skipper, and perform tasks set by an independent RYA examiner, who takes no part in sailing the boat. Yachtmaster Ocean is an oral examination of logs and astro navigational records made by the candidate on an ocean passage.
|What are the prerequisites for these exams?
||Coastal Skipper: 30 days sea time with 2 days as skipper, 800 sea miles, 12 night hours (in previous 10 years), VHF radio operators certificate, First aid certificate. Coastal Skipper Certificate of Completion holders can reduce their sea time to 20 days and their sea miles to 400.
Yachtmaster Offshore: 50 days sea time with 5 days as skipper, 2500 sea miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper, VHF & First Aid as above.
Yachtmaster Ocean: Yachtmaster Ocean certificate of competence, Ocean passage as skipper or mate of watch.
|What certificate will I get and what can I do with it?
||On satisfactory completion of the course you will receive an RYA Competent Crew Certificate, the world's best-recognised qualification for recreational yacht crewing.
|What does it cost?
Coastal Skipper: $675
Yachtmaster Offshore: $730
Yachtmaster Ocean: $420
