RYA Day Skipper sailing course

A skippers essential skills. The basics of skippering - do this course, hire yourself a boat and get out there and practice!


Who should attend? Anyone wishing to charter a bareboat for daytime use in sheltered waters or anyone planning to buy their own vessel.
What experience do I need? You should be familiar with basic navigation theory (to the level of the NZ's Boatmaster or the RYA's Day Skipper shorebased) and have some boat handling skills. You should have spent at least five days on board a boat, covered 100 miles under sail and have some experience of night sailing.
What topics are covered? Vessel preparation and gear stowage, weather forecasting, GPS & electronics operation, taking and plotting visual fixes, voyage planning and pilotage. Routine boat and engine maintenance, troubleshooting and bleeding the fuel system. Keeping a log. Emergency procedures, MOB (man overboard), liferafts and radio operation. Anchoring, docking, picking up a mooring under various conditions of wind and tide, and managing a crew.
How much time is involved? 5 days / 4 nights liveaboard. Courses start at 10am on day one, returning at 5pm on day five with drinks & nibbles at Wakefield Quay House our B&B, overlooking Nelson harbour entrance.
What do I need to bring? Soft, non-slip, non-marking shoes, comfortable clothes, a warm sweater, sunscreen, sunglasses and hat, swimsuit, towel, sleeping bag or bedding, toiletries & medications, change of clothes, a good book, a moderate amount of alcohol if desired. Packed in soft bags.
Onshore luggage storage available if needed.
What do we provide? All safety gear, hot or cold drinks, all meals and snacks. The RYA syllabus and logbook (G15) in which to record your sailing experience (if you don't already have one), the RYA Day Skipper handbook and an RYA certificate of completion. Good quality wet weather clothing can be hired for $50.
What certificate will I get and what can I do with it? On satisfactory completion of the course you will receive the RYA Day Skipper course completion certificate. While it is not a bareboat "charter license", it is recognised throughout the world as a minimum standard for skippering a small cruising yacht.
How many on the course? A maximum of 4 plus your RYA licensed skipper/tutor John Moore. A minimum of 2 students are required before a course is confirmed.
What if the weathers bad? If your instructor decides it would be unsafe to sail and cancels, we will arrange another suitable time. If your timetable precludes this, we refund 100% of the price.
