RYA Competent Crew sailing course

How to be a capable, happy and useful member of any yacht's crew.
A five day liveaboard sailing experience that gives you the skills you need to be a really useful crew member.

Who should attend? Anyone starting out or those who have done a little sailing but have never really felt comfortable and helpful on board.
What experience do I need? There are no prerequisites for joining this course.
What topics are covered? Making basic safety checks, helmsmanship, tacking and gybing & sailing skills, trimming sails for all wind points, steering to a compass, seven essential knots, man overboard practice, basic rules of the road and keeping a lookout. Bending on, reefing and handling sails, basic navigation & chart reading. Anchoring, warp handling, coming alongside. Finding forecasts, understanding sailing terms, stowage & good boat keeping.
How much time is involved? 5 days/4 nights liveaboard. Courses start at 10am on day one, returning at 5pm on day five with drinks & nibbles at Wakefield Quay House our B&B, overlooking Nelson harbour entrance.
What do I need to bring? Soft, non-slip, non-marking shoes, comfortable clothes, a warm sweater, sunscreen, sunglasses and hat, swimsuit, towel, sleeping bag or bedding, toiletries & medications, change of clothes, a good book, a moderate amount of alcohol if desired. Packed in soft bags. Onshore luggage storage available if needed.
What do we provide? All safety gear, hot or cold drinks, all meals and snacks. The RYA G15 syllabus and logbook in which to record your sailing experience. RYA Competent Crew handbook and certificate of completion.
Good quality wet weather clothing can be hired for $50.
What certificate will I get and what can I do with it? On satisfactory completion of the course you will receive an RYA Competent Crew Certificate, the world's best-recognised qualification for recreational yacht crewing.
How many on the course? A maximum of 4 plus your RYA licensed skipper/tutor John Moore. A minimum of 2 students are required before a course is confirmed.
What if the weathers bad? If your instructor decides it would be unsafe to sail and cancels, we will arrange another suitable time.  If your timetable precludes this, we refund 100% of the price.
