| Who should attend? |
Those planning a professional career as a skipper through the RYA Yachtmaster program, and anyone intending to take a yacht offshore or to undertake extended coastal passages. |
| What experience do I need? |
We recommend you have an understanding of navigation and meteorological theory to the level of the RYA/NZ Coastguard Coastal Skipper course and 15 days sea time, including 8 night hours and 2 days as skipper. |
| What topics are covered? |
Voyage planning, preparing the boat, pilotage, crew management and welfare, berthing and unberthing under power in all conditions, anchoring, mooring and
manoeuvring under sail, heavy weather sailing, liferaft drills and emergency procedures. |
| How much time is involved? |
5 days / 4 nights
liveaboard. Courses start at 10am on day one, returning at 5pm on day five with drinks & nibbles at Wakefield Quay House our B&B, overlooking Nelson harbour entrance. |
| What do I need to bring? |
Soft, nonslip shoes, comfortable clothes, a warm sweater, sunscreen, sunglasses and hat, a swimsuit, towel, sleeping bag or bedding, toiletries & medications, change of clothes, a good book , a moderate amount of alcohol if desired. In soft bags.
Onshore luggage storage available if
needed. |
| What do
we provide? |
All safety gear, hot or cold drinks, all meals and snacks. The RYA syllabus & logbook (G15) in which to record your sailing experience (if you don't already have one), the RYA Yachtmaster handbook and an RYA certificate of completion. Good quality wet weather clothing can be hired for $50. |
| What certificate will I get and what can I do with it? |
The RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate will be awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to safely handle the vessel. Holders of this certificate are entitled to a sea time reduction when being examined for the RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence. | How many
on the course? |
A maximum of 4 students plus your RYA licensed skipper/tutor John Moore.
A minimum of 2 students are required
before the course can be confirmed. |
| What if the weathers bad? |
If your instructor decides it would be unsafe to sail and cancels, we will arrange another suitable time.
If your timetable precludes this, we refund
100% of the price. |
